BMW Mechanical Faults
The German car manufacturer BMW produces less reliable cars than many people think. And here at sellyourproblemcar.com, we come across a number of common BMW mechanical faults that have cost far too much to repair, often exceeding the price of the cars themselves.
Here are some of the most common problems:
Timing chains (cam belt) problems
One of the most common problems across all BMW models is the timing belt. This keeps all the engine’s internal moving mechanical components synchronised, so when there’s a problem – when the timing chain slips, jumps or completely snaps – the engine valves’ timing is lost, and the resulting damage can destroy a BMW’s engine.
Some of the BMW models most vulnerable to this timing belt problem are the BMW Z3, the BMW X3 and the X5. It affects the majority of all BMW’s petrol and diesel engines and is found across all Series; 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7.
The BMW M series are usually fitted with what’s called an SMG, or sequential manual gearbox. These gearboxes are controlled electronically, and faults will result in problems engaging 1st gear, trying to reverse, dropping out of gear or failing to start entirely.
Those BMW models with an automatic (or Steptronic) gearbox can also experience problems, wherein the gearbox has no drive or the torque converter has failed.
